R/V Blue Fin continental shelf cruises 1988-1993 File Format: 1. Header a. Location: latitude and longitude, e.g., 30 54.5N 80 03.3W means 30 degrees 54.5 minutes North, and 80 degrees 3.3 minutes west. b. Depth: total water depth at this location. c. Time: time of observation, e.g., 1435EDT means 14:35EDT 2. Data a. depth: sample depth in meters. b. temperature: in Celisus Degrees. c. salinity: Practical Salinity Units. d. chlorophyll a: corrected against chlorophyll samples that were run in a high performance liquid chromatograph. (mg/m^3) Methods documentation CTD casts SeaBird SBE 19 profiler (Serial No. 40) with Sea Tech fluorometer equipped with filters for sensing chlorophyll a in phytoplankton. Voltage output calibrated against discrete filtered samples analyzed by Joan E. Sheldon using high performance liquid chromatography. HPLC Chlorophyll a was standardized against chlorophyll separated from spinach in a Tswett column by Shirley Nishino or against commercial Chlorophyll a by J. E. Sheldon. On most cruises a number of discrete water samples were taken with Niskin samplers and salinity was measured at the Skidaway Institute in a precision salinometer. On most cruises surface water temperature was taken with a bucket thermometer for comparison with the CTD. The mercury thermometer in the bucket thermometer was calibrated against an NBS substandard mercury thermometer. The pressure sensor for estimating depth as decibars was originally calibrated at the factory and occasionally re-calibrated when the instrument was returned for maintenance. Depth range of this instrument is 300 m.
