Bachman's Warbler Vermivora bachmanii

This small songbird was probably always a rare inhabitant of southeastern
U.S. bottomland swamps. The last confirmed records of Bachman's
Warbler are decades past, although sightings continue to occur.
The Altamaha River basin contains suitable nesting habitat within
the historic range of the species, but the only known study-area
record of Bachman's warbler is of an individual seen over the period
of a week in early August 1975, in a Long County swamp. Ordinarily,
a Bachman's warbler would be considered a migrant at this late date,
but the persistence of the bird at this sight may indicate territoriality.
