Bannerfin Shiner Notropis leedsi

The breeding males of this small silvery minnow are brightly colored and distinctive. The bannerfin occurs in the same sandy shallows of the Altamaha and lower Ohoopee rivers as does the Ocmulgee shiner, and females, non-breeding males and young are difficult to distinguish between the two species. This species occurs in five major river basins of the Gulf and Atlantic slopes of Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. Twenty records of bannerfin shiner from ten quads and nine counties attest to the species' abundance relative to the Ocmulgee shiner.
