Feral Pig Sus scrofa

Wild hogs of the Altamaha River basin are descendants of domestic swine escaped from or released by early explorers and more recent settlers. They are successful exotics, proliferating rapidly despite hunting pressure.

They affect native plants by rooting up herbs and shrubs, virtually plowing the soil in areas of high pig density. Feral pigs harm native animals by competing for forage and eating snakes and other small animals.

They are common from the barrier islands to the confluence of the Oconee and Ocmulgee rivers, and are a particular problem in riverine hardwood swamps.
