Alabama Milkvine Matelea alabamensis (Vail) Woodson

A perennial vine with milky sap and heart shaped, opposite leaves. In sunny openings greenish-yellow flowers bloom in April and May. By late summer 10-cm-long spiny pods filled with tufted seeds are produced.

It is found only on mesic river bluffs, from southeast Alabama to south Georgia and north Florida. There are several populations on the Altamaha River bluffs in Wayne and Appling counties.

It is threatened by competition from woody plants and development.
