Piping Plover Charadrius melodus

This small, pale shorebird has become rare due to increasing human presence on beaches and other sandy areas where it lives. Piping plovers breed along the northern Atlantic Coast, the Great Lakes, and along major rivers in the northern Great Plains; they winter along southeastern beaches, including those along Georgia's barrier islands. One study-area record represents piping plovers which have been observed on Little St. Simons Island in Glynn County.

The Georgia Sea Grant Program has produced a short (2 minutes) radio program about the piping plover that you can listen to by clicking here.
