Altamaha Slabshell Elliptio hopetonensis

With its large size, rectangular shape and thick shell, the endemic slabshell lives up to its name. It is probably the commonest native mussel in the Altamaha River, occurring in a variety of substrates, but most frequently in fine sand and coarse silt in stable sediments. Ten records of this species are known from seven quads in five counties.
