Mud Sunfish Acantharchus pomotis

This nocturnal, secretive sunfish of sluggish blackwater streams is uncommon along the U.S. Atlantic and eastern Gulf Coastal plains. Within the Altamaha River basin, the species has been recorded historically in Penholoway and Goose Run creeks, and was collected in Doctors Creek during the Inventory. All three locations are in the Lower Coastal Plain. This species is difficult to observe and collect, and may be more common in the study area than these records indicate.
